It’s about village families.

‘Health literacy’ is the degree to which an individual has the capacity to obtain, process and understand basic life skills, health services, wellness information and environmental variables needed to make positive decisions affecting individual health, as well as his or her extended family’s health.

Weak health literacy skills are associated with riskier health and wellbeing behaviors, poorer health, less self-management and more hospitalization and preventable health-related costs.  Strengthening health literacy builds individual and community resilience, helps address health inequities and improves health and wellbeing.  Specific evidence is presented by WHO in its comprehensive European publication, Health Literacy:  The Basic Facts for educational settings, workplaces, marketplaces, health systems, new and traditional media and political arenas.
